Single use surgical forceps were introduced in the United Kingdom after the out break of Creutzfeldt Jakob disease at the turn of the century.
The human form of mad cows disease was being spread thorugh surgical instruments even though the equipment was sterilised several times. Residue from the protien that carried Creutzfeldt Jakob disease was still apparent on the instruments used during surgery and so was transmitted when used on another patient. The only was to get around this contamination was to develop things like single use surgical forceps and other operating equipment in the hope of eradicating the problem.
